Meatless Monday: Inspirational Celebrity Vegans

2490743171_6bc5e0201f_zIt is estimated that approximately 0.1-0.2% of the population is vegan. Though this is not an extremely low percentage, it still entails that it is likely that you don’t know any vegans. When trying to be (and stay) a vegan, it’s useful to have a friend or family member that is also vegan so that you can be in it together. If this is not possible, why not take inspiration from some of your favourite actors, musicians or artists? If they can do it... why can’t you?!

Famous vegans and their inspirational quotes:

Musicians

3211396770_0d5eee3627_zAlanis Morisette: “Kale is my best friend. I eat kale salad. I put kale in my smoothies, kale in my soup. Kale, kale, kale! I feel like Popeye. I love it. I definitely need variety or I get super bored, so I have to mix it up with different sauces and tahini or whatever.”

Anthony Kiedis of Red Hot Chili Peppers: "Soon after I [went vegan] I saw some documentary footage of what happens in the factory farming of cows .... It sealed the deal."

Brandy: “"I'm 23 now, and I've grown into this woman. I feel sexy and more mature. I wanted these inside changes to be reflected in both my look and music. I am a vegan now, and it was a conscious decision. I studied a lot about African culture and health and the best way to take care of the body. I really wanted to be healthy”

3353216083_edf806afed_zBryan Adams: “I eat a balanced diet of fresh fruit and vegetables, grains, almonds and rice. I also love tofu and try to include it a few times a week, and I'm currently into making my own almond milk, which is heaven with a little maple syrup.”

Erykah Badu: “Vegan food is soul food in its truest form. Soul food means to feed the soul. And, to me, your soul is your intent. If your intent is pure, you are pure.”

Fiona Apple: "Millions of people are learning that a vegetarian diet is the healthy choice for themselves, the Earth and the animals".

Jason Mraz: “Let’s say you’re a vegan or if you choose to eat raw food. Well, that makes you a little more conscious about what you’re putting in your body, therefore, raising your consciousness, if you will.”

Joan jett: “To become vegetarian, or vegan. I am vegetarian, I have fluctuated between the two, but my goal is to be vegan. It helps the animals and the earth.”

KD Lang: “If you knew how meat was made, you'd probably lose your lunch.”

5716300492_c5507c7bef_zMoby: “Basically we should stop doing those things that are destructive to the environment, other creatures, and ourselves and figure out new ways of existing.”

Ruben Studdard: “ I totally see a difference in my skin, everything. Vegetarianism is a better way if you’re really trying to live a healthier lifestyle.”

Tim McIlrath of Rise Against: “I was a meat-eater and never had any intention of giving that up. But after seeing videos like Meat is Murder and reading more and more about how the inhumane treatment of animals as well as how low-quality and disgusting our meat and dairy products really are, I just couldn't actually physically stomach it any longer. “

Actors & Actresses

5176772733_ff1e07dc8b_zAlicia Silverstone: “I did it for political, moral reasons, thinking that I was making this great sacrifice, but it was absolutely necessary; I was not going to contribute to the violence in the world anymore.”

Alyssa Milano: “I turned vegetarian after 9/11. A friend of mine came back from New York and said that he couldn't stand the smell of burnt flesh. It immediately reminded me of a barbecue.”

Casey Affleck: “People should try eating no animal products for just ONE DAY a week.”

Clint Eastwood: “I take vitamins daily, but just the bare essentials not what you'd call supplements. I try to stick to a vegan diet heavy on fruit, vegetables, tofu, and other soy products.”

3371640116_7c51ba7a28_zEllen DeGeneres: “You ask people why they have deer heads on the wall. They always say, Because it's such a beautiful animal. There you go. I think my mother's attractive, but I have photographs of her.”

Emily Deschanel: “I’ve been vegan for 15 years, and it turns out it makes a very big impact on the environment to eat fewer animal products, which cause more greenhouse gases than all of transportation combined. The United Nations did a study just over two years ago, and that blew my mind. I started thinking that if people are vegetarian for just one day a week, that makes a huge difference!”

Eric Roberts: “We consider all our animals to be our kids”

30383685_a9eff9c944Jared Leto: “I’m a vegan. I respect the environment and I do my best to spread the importance of such an issue.”

Joaquin Phoenix: “I was 3-years-old - to this day it is a vivid memory. My family and I were on a boat, catching fish. As one fish was caught, he was writhing, then he was thrown against the side of the boat. You couldn't disguise what it was. This was what we did to animals to eat them. The animal went from a living, vibrant creature fighting for life to a violent death. I recognised it, as did my brothers and sisters.”

4587484467_ee22a469f6_zLea Michele: “I believe that what we put into our bodies is important. I became a vegan when I moved to California. I eat a lot, but really well. Every morning, I make a tofu scramble with soy cheese; lunch and dinner is usually a salad, with lots of vegetables, and pasta. I love to cook. I make a great baked ziti pasta.

Portia de Rossi: “I always thought going vegan would be difficult, but I genuinely don't crave meat or cheese. And I feel happier, like I'm contributing to making the world a less violent place.”

Steve-o: ‘I have been really enjoying making a project out of seeking out an extremely healthy diet of raw, organic, vegan foods- and I plan on continuing to do so.”

Toby Maguire: “"It's never really been that hard for me. I've never had any desire to eat meat. In fact, when I was a kid I would have a really difficult time eating meat at all. It had to be the perfect bite, with no fat or gristle or bone or anything like that.”

Woody Harrelson: “I've been vegan for about 10 and a half years. It's been all good. I'm obviously much healthier”

Models

Heather Mills: “After my leg was amputated, pelvis crushed, lung punctured and head split open, I could not heal in hospital on a meat and dairy diet. A friend saved me and introduced me to a plant based one which healed my infection and saved my knee.Later came animals and the planet as my awareness was raised. Every time I look at animals or feed my daughter a vegan meal, I think “Wow - how great I'm not harming her, the animals or the planet”. If I do nothing else in my life, how great is that.”

3576217527_cc0e2d3f71Petra Nemcova: “I became quite green – I have a very strong connection to nature. I read that if we fish the way we fish, in 2048 there will be no more fish left, which is pretty soon. So it’s a statement.”

Artists

Leonardo da Vinci: “Truly man is the king of beasts, for his brutality exceeds theirs.  We live by the death of others:  we are burial places!  I have from an early age abjured the use of meat, and the time will come when men such as I will look on the murder of animals as they now look on the murder of men”
