Desperately trying to sustain your fitness resolutions but winter colds are getting in the way? If you have difficulty determining whether it's OK to exercise when you're sick you can generally apply this rule of thumb: If you're ailments are above the neck (runny nose, cough, etc.) you can go ahead with your workout, but if your symptoms are below the neck, (soreness, stuffed chest) you need to put all your energy into your recovery.
If you have a cold, moderate exercise won't worsen your symptoms but you definitely want to choose a lower intensity workout as you still will need your rest and don't want to overexert yourself- You might want to tone down your cardio workout and focus on strength training exercises like yoga and pilates. If you have a fever, the worst thing you could do is exercise. Your body needs to restore itself and trying to 'sweat out your fever' can be incredibly dangerous for your health.
