Neti Pots have gained popularity as a natural way to cleanse the nasal passage. Traditionally these genie lamp-shaped pots were used for a purifying exercise done by yogis, and have more recently became popular with the general public when television personality Dr.Oz drew attention to them as a natural alternative for clearing away irritants and excess mucus from the nasal passage. Unfortunately, there are many precautions to consider before using a neti pot and if used incorrectly it can be fatal- as it was for two people who made the mistake of using contaminated tap water to clear their nasal passage.
Both neti-pot related deaths occurred in Louisiana last year when the users contracted an extremely rare brain-eating amoeba. While this may have been a very rare occurrence, it is crucial to only use a saline solution diluted in lukewarm water that has been properly filtered, boiled or distilled.
If used properly, neti pots are a terrific alternative to medication for congestion. Even Oprah swears by them:
"I was in South Africa, and I didn't have a neti pot," she says. "I was stuffed up and couldn't breathe, and I went in and I didn't have a neti pot, so I tried to find a gravy dish to try to do it!"
