How Healthy is Frozen Yogurt?

blueberry sorbetFrozen Yogurt, a popular alternative to ice cream, is often considered to be the “healthier” choice. But just how “healthy” is it?

Frozen yogurt is, as expected, healthier than traditional ice cream (but perhaps not as healthy as homemade sorbet!); however, it is no health food. Though called frozen “yogurt”, it is not reaping with the same benefits.  Ice cream and frozen yogurt are very similar, in the sense that they are made almost the same way. Frozen yogurt uses yogurt to replace the cream that is used in making ice cream. Despite being known for being “low fat”, sugar is added in the frozen yogurt during the manufacturing process.

Another benefit of yogurt that is projected onto frozen yogurt are the probiotic cultures. Some common benefits of the probiotic culture, such as an increased tolerance for lactose and  a boost in the immune system, are not provided by frozen yogurt. Despite the fact that there are probiotic cultures, the number is significantly lower than that in regular yogurt. Furthermore, only a portion of the probiotic culture in frozen yogurt actually makes it to the digestive tract.

The claim that frozen yogurt has the same benefits as yogurt is one that cannot be justified. Despite this, frozen yogurt should not be seen as a guiltless pleasure, but as the same as any frozen dessert. However, like any treat, sticking to a reasonable portion every once in awhile is a harmless pleasure.
