Many may wonder how they can have a positive influence on the planet. What can we do to help? What can we do to lessen the negative impact we have on the environment? One topic that is of particular interest is our carbon footprint. A carbon footprint is “the total amount of greenhouse gases produced to directly and indirectly support human activities”. It is frequently measured in terms of the amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) that is used. Without realizing it, our daily activities are negatively affecting the world around us. How can we change this? We can start by following through with the recommendations listed below.
- Reduce Energy Consumption at Home. Turn the dishwasher on only when it is full, turn off electronics when they aren’t being used, and adjust the temperature on your thermostat.
- Make The Most Out of Household Items. Be creative and make crafts out of simple items from home, recycle plastic bags, aluminum and water bottles, and alter your water mode when going on vacation to save energy.
- Rethink Your Mode of Transportation. Bike or walk to enjoy the warm weather and if you do choose to drive, avoid driving during peak hours.
- Be Wise When Choosing to Drive. Change the air filter in your vehicle, make sure the tires are inflated, and be sure to get your car serviced regularly.
- Reduce, Reuse and Recycle At The Office. Use double-sided paper when copying and printing, reuse envelopes and folders, and have recycling bins located around the office.
- Opt for Flight Alternatives. Incorporate technology at work by video conferencing and webcasting and use Skype when communicating with family and friends out of town.
These are some of the easiest ways to reduce your carbon footprint individually, at home or at the office. If you want to have a positive impact on the environment around you, start by being proactive to reducing your carbon footprint today!
