And you thought the Left had to worry about the Tea Partiers?
In a new and impressively innovative method of public manipulation, an online Right-wing group called the 'Digg Patriots' is at large, taking a page from Tonya Harding’s book and striking the Left-wing competition out at the knees.
While this time the extreme Right is not in your face yelling about death panels and the right to bear arms on television, they’re behind the scenes literally ‘burying’ liberal articles in an attempt to give conservative ones greater visibility.
The powerhouse of social media websites, Digg, is investigating a claim that the group of Right-wing users have been burying Left-leaning articles that promote the liberal agenda, such as those on the topic of climate change.
The story broke on Thursday August 5th when Alternet published an article describing their lengthy investigation proving the underground group’s culpability.
The way Digg works is fairly straightforward. The more ‘diggs’ an article, video, or image receives, the more likely it is to show up on the front page. Much like in the democratic model, everyone is supposed to have one vote and those votes are supposed to be equal in value. However, much like the democratic reality, this is not actually the case, as influences such as elitist views and which side has the wealthiest patron, have a colossal impact on political outcomes.
The Digg Patriots completed their clandestine operation by creating multiple Digg accounts, upvoting submissions of a conservative nature (i.e. ‘Digging’ the story) and voting down items submitted by progressives (i.e. burying them from the public eye).
Digg Patriot ‘phoenixtx (aka vrayz)’ was quoted as saying:
"The more liberal stories that were buried the better chance conservative stories have to get to the front page. I'll continue to bury their submissions until they change their ways and become conservatives."
Yikes, these guys scare me more than Chucky and Glenn Beck combined.
This story reminds us all to be critical of what we read and where we receive our information, as well as not to trust Right-wingers. I kid, I kid. I’m sure if a group of Right-wing nuts devised this Pinky and the Brain-esque plan, a group on the extreme left is somewhere doing the same.
All is fair in love, politics, and war…Right?
