Human Rights? Now we’re finally talking.
I was wondering when the news outlets were going to talk about this. I may have human rights tunnel vision when it comes to global issues, but I’m not the only one. The Danish Institute for Human Rights is concerned that a final agreement in Copenhagen might not protect the human rights of the most vulnerable groups. Apparently the language being used is "inaccurate" and "inappropriately" placed throughout the text, and does not clearly identify those terms pertaining to human rights. Really? That’s odd. Strange that a multilateral agreement spanning 192 countries would be vague in terms of human rights, considering I’m sure the fiscal matters are being spelt out as clear as a cheap movie deal on a Tuesday (Orange Wednesdays in the UK).
Anyone who’s not living under a rock (sorry Osama) knows that climate change will have a colossal impact on human rights. And if they don’t, they need only think about it for a moment longer to realize the implications. The incredible economic, political, social, and public health catastrophes that accompany the worst-case scenario of climate change, threaten the security of everyone on the planet. However, like everything else in this world, these catastrophes pose the greatest threat to the most marginalized groups. It’ll be interesting to see what the final drawn up agreement will include regarding human rights. Though I’d prefer to bet otherwise, my money’s on more vague terms and even less commitment. And you should know, I only make bets I know I won’t lose.
Yesterday I mentioned the Raise Your Voice Youtube campaign. Don’t be surprised if you see a little brunette from Canada asking about these same things (maybe I’ll try and find my Ninja Turtles mask to make it interesting).
Until next time.
Same green time, same green station.
