DIY Air Conditioner for Hot Summer Days

In the heat of summer urban living canmelting popsicle sometimes be challenging, especially without an air conditioner, but considering how much energy air conditioners consume, pat yourself on the back if you have come this far without one. But with temperatures expected to skyrocket this summer, will your ceiling fan be enough?

Maybe not, but consider making an easy, eco-friendly DIY air conditioner instead of buying one that uses a tone of CO2 emitting energy that will only make future summers even hotter.

Here’s how it’s done:

  1. Put a bowl of ice in front of a standing fan and adjust the fan so that the air is blowing directly over the ice. A metal bowl works best, but ceramic or glass works fine too.
  2. As the ice melts and the water evaporates, the air cools around it.
  3. The fan then blows the cooled air towards you and into your home.
  4. The melted water in the bowl can be refrozen in ice-cube trays and reused again in the same process.
