I seem to have found inspiration to continue blogging this week - in the person of Dr. Hermann Scheer. He echoes the conviction of many, that solar energy is the "It" technology solution to our energy needs globally - that and wind power. I began blogging about solar energy in a bit of a bubble, in that I didn't know much about what was going on globally but knew we needed to be shifting to solar energy if we were to create a safer world. No Nuclear (not remotely sustainable) or Natural gas (mostly methane-which is worse than CO2) - but SOLAR.
I discovered Dr. Scheer and a few years back read 'The Solar Economy' to get a sense of his work and vision. Many in the solar industry know something about the man and if you don't know much about the solar revolution he is the one to read to understand the historical evolution of the present global solar genesis. I do slightly revere the man and you can't help but respect his clarity, conviction and will. He has been the catalyst for energy change, creating sound policies that drive solar and renewable industries - encouraging investment, breathing momentum into the business of renewable energy production.
Dr. Scheer a native German, presently holds the office of Chairman of the World Council for Renewable Energy, is the Founder and President of Eurosolar, and a member of the German Bundestag-the German government's thinktank dedicated to hashing out key ideas that form sound policy amongst other things. Dr. Scheer is an author and speaker - a truly timely educator for the world. His life's work has been dedicated to the shift away from our energy dependence on fossil fuels to clean and sustainable renewable energies. He has demonstrated the necessity and feasibility of the transition to solar energy in his books, through successful policy implementation, through public speaking and writing, in both Germany, the EU and abroad.
He suggests that the transition to renewable forms of energy with the aid of modern technologies will lead to a - solar information society. This shift, now fully underway, is creating needed and structural change of our civilization, not seen since the beginning of the industrial age. He knows firmly that renewable energies have and will continue to provide unquantified benefits for communities and social well-being around the world by mitigating climate change, answering national security issues, improving the health and well being of people and other life on the planet, addressing the water crisis, cleaning cities, protecting and restoring our vital agricultural businesses, creating new industrial jobs and fighting underdevelopment and the ever present levels of deprivation in the developing world in health care, quality of life, where we see social and economic turmoil.
Dr Scheer's policy concepts for renewable energy dissemination have served to create legal frameworks in Germany and the EU, while He and his visionary approach have become a saught after commodity - consulted by governments and parliamentarians in Europe, Africa, Asia and Latin America. He has been, in a word, the "heart" of the solar revolution breathing life into concepts that would otherwise sit merely on a shelf in one of his books.
If you want to learn about the solar revolution get plugged into what Dr. Scheer is doing and discussing. He demonstrates extraordinary human characteristics not just as a leader but as an unique and nontraditional social activist of sorts, understanding the whole problem rather than just focusing on it's many parts as separate. He truly conveys scope in his comprehension and acknowledgment of our need to see the inter-dependence of our societies, countries, economies and our indeed our very mutual well-being on the planet and how we can change.
I recommend you read as many of his book as you can find, which explain the different parts of the solar revolution. Two books, I would say read for sure, A Solar Manifesto and The Solar Economy: Renewable Energy for a Sustainable Global Future .
