Finding WiFi connectivity in remote areas can give you serious headache. In order to provide WiFi connections even in the most inaccessible area two students from the Rochester Institute of Technology have come up with a solution that is a “Wind Turbine powers WiFi-Repeater”. Using very little amount, Dan Lampie and David Brenner have installed a high directional antenna that sends and receives the WiFi data from a location with internet connectivity to the remote area, while a WiFi repeater is used to extend the wireless.

The duo makes use of two Linksys WRT54G routers running the DD-WRT firmware to achieve Internet connectivity. Another issue that had to be taken into consideration was that most of the remote areas don’t have a handy outlet to plug into. So, the duo used home-built wind turbine and solar panels to generate renewable energy to charge a battery that powers the nodes, which enables WiFi and VOIP connectivity.
