Do you know which countries use the most oil and which produce the most? Do you know how much of US oil is produced from offshore oil drilling? Do you know what we use oil for the most in the US?

If you want to know where most oil comes from and where most of it goes, I ran across a great infographic at GOOD.IS recently with just this information.

The oil infographic can be viewed at a better resolution than above via GOOD.IS, but here are the few key points that stood out to me:

• The United States accounts for 10% of global oil production, but 23% of consumption.
• 71% of US oil consumption is for transportation.
• 30% of US oil production is from offshore oil drilling.

Additionally, a lot of that oil we consume but don’t produce in the US comes from countries that are unfriendly or even hostile to the United States.

So, what are the lessons?

• We use a lot more oil than we produce. Should probably cut down on our oil consumption.
• We get a good percentage of our domestic oil from rather unsafe offshore oil drilling. Should probably cut down on our oil consumption.
• Most of the huge amount of oil we use goes towards unsustainable car and plane transportation. Should probably drive and fly less to cut down on our oil consumption.
