WHAT IS JUTE
A plant grown from seed so it is 100% natural. Jute is grown in rotation with rice and other vegetables during the monsoon season hence it means minimal or no use of fertilizers and pesticides.
Needs just 3-4 months to grow to its 10-12 feet.
Provides farmers with a source of income.
Every part of this plant is useful. Primarily used to get fibre, its roots nourish the earth when left in the ground, parts of it are used as fire wood. Its leaves (which I have seen available in the frozen food section of our grocery store) are edible too.
Jute plants absorb about 15 tons of CO2 from the atmosphere and releases 11 tons of oxygen during its short growth period.
Jute has been used as packaging for centuries. Coffee beans, cocao, potatoes and many other products are packaged in jute. |
