The Enviro-Art Project
Level: Grades 1 - 3

The Enviro-Art Project is designed to introduce young primary school students to environmental issues through art. Students will create artwork depicting their interpretations of the environment, and the human effect upon it. First, teachers will make an introductory presentation on the environment. Then, students will produce artwork that reflects their own ideas of what the environment means to them. Teachers can provide students with whatever art medium they see fit; provided that once all of the projects have been completed they are photographed and uploaded to the 4GS website.

Creating Molly Nature
Level: Grades 1 - 3

Students will create solutions and imagine a disguise for the world’s newest super heroine, Molly Nature, who against the evil Global Warmer and his cohorts of environmental destructors. She needs student help in illustrating how she can defeat her adversaries to save our planet, as well as a disguise in which to do so. This project is also a competition, in which teachers will submit the best class drawings the best of which will become the official design for Molly Nature. In addition, the school whose student is awarded first place will win $500 worth of eco-friendly art supplies!

Story Time
Level: Grades 3 - 4

Students will research an environmental topic of their choice and compose a short story about their chosen topic. Each story will include a central lesson pertaining to the environment. Students will first research an environmental topic; then, using the information they have researched, students will write a short story. The stories can be as imaginative and whimsical as the students would like, provided that they remain consistent with the overall theme. This assignment acts as the equivalent of a research paper for students at the primary level.

Green Journal
Level: Grades 3 - 5

Students will incorporate as many environmental or eco-friendly habits as possible into their daily lives for a designated period of time. They will keep a daily journal or scorecard documenting their transitional experience. We ask teachers to share the results of this assignment with us, so that we may calculate the carbon footprint of students during this period of adopting green habits. The habits children are taught today will affect their daily routines for years to come. By encouraging green habits in this assignment, we can increase the probability that they will be practiced later on in life.

The Youth Report
Level: Grades 5 - 8

Students will investigate an environmental issue of their choice and create an investigative report which will be submitted in written or video format. The Youth Report allows students to take an active leadership role by probing for environmental stories first hand and creating a report. The investigative nature of this assignment will require students to be creative in thinking about what approach to take in their report. This exercise has the added benefit of encouraging media literacy by teaching students to think critically about what they read and the way information is presented. The Youth Report is an international competition wherein he best student reports will be featured online, contributing to an environmental news database for students around the world.. The school with the most creative and effective project will be awarded a Sony camcorder!

Research Paper
Level: Grades 7 - 12

Students will complete a research paper on an environmental topic of their choice. It is important for students to begin to gain understanding of environmental issues, terminology and applications and this assignment provides a good platform for students to become informed and knowledgeable on a particular environmental topic. The paper should be structured in the conventional academic manner, with an introduction, development and conclusion. Upon completion, students can upload their work to the Four Green Steps website.

Young Leaders Project
Level: Grades 7 - 12

Students will identify an environmental problem in their community and take action. They will report on an issue in depth, and develop their own solutions, and attempt to put those solutions into effect. Students will chronicle their efforts in a journal or essay and later present the overall success of their project to the rest of the class. This assignment may be conducted over several months. The project was designed to give students a taste of community activism, as they work toward developing effective solutions to real problems. Once all of the assignments have been completed, teachers will enter the top projects in the competition, where they will have the chance to win a Solar Power Generator Kit by Sunforce.

Student Solutions
Level: Grades 7 - 12

Students will explore and chart solutions to the largest and most pertinent man-made environmental problems. They will characterize the issue they have chosen to engage, explore existing solutions with a keen analytical eye, and propose their own solutions as they see fit. This assignment is designed to train students to think critically about global environmental issues, while honing their problem solving skills and teaching them to consider current issues with the level of concern and attention they deserve.

3rd Annual Green Science Fair
Level I: Grades 5 - 6

Level II: Grades 7 - 8
Level III: Grades 9 - 10
Level IV: Grades 11 - 12

This virtual competition, which will include entries from around the world, is open to all schools and students who have prepared a science project with an environmental theme. Following the scientific method, we expect students to first conceive of a question, construct and test a hypothesis, and then present their final results. These results can be submitted using videos, photos, and written reports. 1st, 2nd, and 3rd prize winners will all be honoured individually and the 1st prize winner will also win a wind generator kit for their school!
